How to Take Psychedelic Self-Portrait Photos at Home
As a photographer, I find it important to not only to get in front of the camera (so I can practice the creativity and vulnerability I ask my clients to show up with in front of the camera), but to play in front of the camera. To try weird things. Strange angles. Odd close ups. Or strange filters.
So a few weeks ago, I set up a quick self-portrait shoot with myself. I wanted it to feel vintage and parisian (hence the beret). And I didn’t want to spend any money to make my photos look filmy and as if they are from another era.
I had so much fun I wanted to share my loose steps for creation! Here’s how to Take Psychedelic Self-Portrait Photos at Home:
If you try your own self-portrait at home, I recommend finding a blank wall or cool corner to shoot in. You can use so many items to cover your lens and give it a filter. I like to use plastic wrap, colorful clear shower caps, doilies, and on this occasion, I even tried my dog’s poop bags. Thanks Tonks for your vital artistic contributions. Don’t worry, it was a clean poop bag. What filter do you think I should try next?
I do recommend using a camera with a lens big enough to be fully covered, but you could for sure try this with your phone lens if you don’t have a camera.
Put your camera on a timer and attach your DIY filter using a hair band or rubber band, then start snapping away. If you find the focus is off, I suggest manually focusing it on the spot you’ll be sitting before turning on your timer.
I love how these came out. The doilie ended up being my favorite filter. I’m definitely going to use some of these methods moving forward.
Have you ever tried something like this at home with your own camera? I’d love to hear how it goes!!!
Stay creative and Take Care,
Stacie
