I'll Have What She's Having | Re-Watching Sherlock

Rewatching Sherlock and loving it just as much as the first time. Pop Culture with Stacie Stine

“The Game is the Foot!” -Andy Dwire

We decided to re-watch Sherlock this January.

It all started in December when we discussed what we thought our all-time favorite shows EVER are. Like, if we were forced to put together a top five- what would they be? Brett thought Sherlock might be one his favorite shows of all time, and I can’t blame him.

It’s a masterpiece.

The best part about watching it this time, was forgetting most of the episodes. I knew big plot points, but for the most part, I’d forgotten everything. Forgetting a TV show rarely happens to me, so this was sort of nice?

Brett’s question to me after the first season was, “Why do we like Sherlock?” And after watching every season, I’ll admit— I do like him. From the very beginning. Even when he’s being an ass hole and doesn’t realize it. I like his abruptness, blunt delivery, and his desire to bring justice.

In the last season (no spoilers), Sherlock experiences someone else sacrificing their life for him, and it ultimately leads him to say that that act of love is “a currency [he does] not know how to spend”. He truly doesn’t know how to live after being loved and cared for so deeply. He reforms a drug habit and is addicted to every case brought his way. It takes a lot for him to realize that showing up to life and living it alongside those who love him is one way of living. Truly living.

On a spiritual note, this storyline makes me cry— especially when he admits he doesn’t know how to live life after someone else sacrificed their life for him. I live every day knowing someone else has sacrificed their life for me so that I can live instead. It is a core part of my faith that Jesus willingly sacrificed his life for the world. Even when I deserved to die instead. This is an act of love that is so great and moving. Following Jesus and living a sacrificial life like he lived is part of my calling and it is a currency he shows me how to spend— he gives me purpose, love, and gives me a God and community who loves me unconditionally.

Are you a Sherlock fan? Have you ever re-watched it? What did you think?
