2024 Trends I'm Ignoring and Embracing

Trends I’m embracing

Trousers and Polo Shirts will forever feel timeless to me!

Did you know you can decide whether you want to jump on a fashion trend or not? I wish someone would have told me that when I was trying to find my style in high school and college. While I think you should jump on trends that excite you, I don’t think you should jump on trends just because you’ll feel left behind if you don’t.

Just in case you don’t believe me, I’ve put together a Pinterest board of the 2024 trends….

Questions I like to ask myself every time I see Street Fashion photos from the month or new Runway looks is:

  • Does this trend fit into the color palette I gravitate toward (for me that’s mustard yellow, orange, latte brown, cream, greens)?

  • Is this trend going to feel comfortable on my body and be worn on a day to day basis?

  • What pieces in my closet will I wear this with?

  • And because I’m a millennial who loves a vintage modern mix of styles, I ask: Does this fit into my already existing vintage modern aesthetic?

Based on those questions, here are the 2024 trends I’m embracing based on my own personal style:

  • Trousers and Very High-waisted pants- I’ve been waiting for this to be a trend ever since I was a little girl.

  • Rosettes and bows- I guess I thought bows were always in style? This is a year where girlieness and girlhood have been embraced in women’s fashion, so this trend excites me.

  • Straight leg jeans- embracing a looser silhouette is fine by me.

  • Metallic- but only in gold and only if it’s a pop of metallic, like a scarf. I’ve never been a huge metallic fan and this feels very trendy.

  • The Polo Shirt- A vintage inspired polo shirt yes. A golf-inspired or private school uniform inspired polo shirt— no. I wore uniforms in high school and you don’t really find a polo appealing after being forced to wear it your entire life.

  • Oversized Cropped blazer- Since I like high waisted trousers I think I can embrace this trend as a cropped blazer looks great with high-waisted trousers— but only if I can thrift one and crop it myself. This is a trend and I think full length blazers are more worth investing in than a cropped one.

  • Sweatshirt hoodies but just the hoodies… I could be into this if it’s cute and crochete.

Trends I’m going to let others embrace (ahem, I’m ignoring these trends):

  • Baggy pants

  • Sambas- I’m still stuck on converse and vans. And honestly just still trying to digest what it feels like to wear sneakers with anything that’s not atheletic wear.

  • Sports Jerseys- If it were dress up as your favorite musical instead, I’d be into that.

  • Low rise anything…

  • Roses- I love florals, but I’m not a big fan of what I’ve seen of the roses on the runway.

  • Sheer fabrics- I don’t feel like myself in most sheer things. Tool, I love. Sheer, it’s not for me.

  • Cut outs- Cut outs are one of the number one trends I feel super confident saying no to because I feel like they come and go so fast (but mad respect for the designers who make cutouts because they are not easy to design).

  • Capris- I think I’m scarred by the last time these were a trend.

  • Red- I love red, I don’t own a lot of red and just because it’s in, doesn’t mean I will purchase it. I own a lot of orange and orangy red items, and those will definiitely come out this season, but I’m not buying red just because it’s in.

  • All black outfits- frankly, I look terrible in black. It clashes with my olive skin tone and my dark brown hair.

  • A blend of sweats and high-fashion. I love my sweasts, but I’m probably not going to blend these.

Realizing I don’t have to keep up with trends is one of the greatest truths I’ve ever embraced. It frees me to find my personal style and to not feel behind when it comes to fashion. What trends have you embraced in the past and what trends will you embrace this year?
